This arc is not connected with previous 8 episodes, so anyone can watch it, it's separate story. And I guess these other 8 episodes were not released on BD - I wonder for what reason?

This arc was included as part of the Mononoke blu-ray box set since it stars the Medicine Seller. Who knows when/if they will ever release the rest of Ayakashi on blu-ray.
